Bladder Control

What is stress urinary “INCONTINENCE?”

This is an unfortunate occurrence that normally appears or worsens as a woman ages (30’s -60’s) and is usually associated with prior child birth. Most commonly there is loss of urine when a woman coughs, sneezes, stands or walks. This is called “stress urinary incontinence” and is usually associated with weakened pelvic floor muscles.

What does UROGYNECOLOGY mean?

The field of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a new subspecialty called Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. The prior name for this field was UROGYNECOLOGY. This is a science dedicated to the study and treatment of pelvic floor disorders in women. These disorders lead to leakage of urine (incontinence) and prolapse of pelvic organs (uterus, bladder, and rectum).

All of our doctors have been trained to perform UROGYNECOLOGIC procedures. These procedures include surgical treatment of both urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse (uterine, vaginal, bladder, and rectal prolapse).

Our doctors can provide a variety of treatments to improve or relieve symptoms of prolapse, urinary incontinence, or other pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms. We may advise conservative (non surgical) or surgical therapy depending on your wishes, the severity of your condition, and your general health. Kegel exercises, biofeedback, pessary or biocompatible injections of collagen like materials are some of the non-surgical treatments.
